What a year 2020 was, visitor numbers were down 66%! These are the stark figures from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA). Some outdoor places like Kew Gardens jumped up into the top 10 as the lockdown got tougher.

But this wasn’t the case everywhere as Wales & Scotland have different lockdown criteria.

The big factor that has reduced the numbers is tourists from other countries. Some of the attractions were open last summer and early autumn but you can see them down a lot. It could be even worse this year as last year they had record numbers in January and February.

Our annual figures for 2020 reflect what a devastatingly hard year the Attractions sector and the wider visitor economy faced. Tourism is the UK’s 5th biggest industry and, as these figures show, was hit first, hit hardest and will take the longest to recover. Bernard Donoghue, Director of ALVA

This could be the best time for local people to visit these attractions when they open up after the 17th of May.
